EXCLUSIVE RGBO INTERVIEW: ERNIE HUDSON

April 10, 2008 - One Response

By: Tim Geisler, Staff Writer

On April 5th, 2008, my wife, Jennifer and her brother, Jason joined me in going to the Stony Brook ICON 2008 Convention. In the mist of Darth Vader, Boba Fett, Grand Master Shake, Link and a sea of Anime characters sat a very happy man. From the first steps you take inside, you are automatically in gridlock to a massive line to see the True Ghostbuster, Mr. Ernie Hudson. There were other actors next to Ernie that were in cartoons, Star Trek and Star Wars, but it was hands down the V.I.P. of the convention was the man who portrayed Winston Zedmore, that got the most attention by far!

I was hornored to have Ernie sign my sealed Ghostbusters DVD box set and have my picture taken with him. I waited with much patience for the lines to die down for a bit to squeeze some time in with the famous actor. Finally, the time had come at around five thirty. As Ernie was packing away his photos and booth, I stood next to him, interviewing him as last minute overwhelmed fans began to approach the Ghostbuster Icon.

RGBO: How did you find the part of Winston Zeddemore?
E.H.: “I made a movie with Ivan Reitman, a year before ‘Ghostbusters’ called, ‘Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone’ with Peter Strauss and Molly Ringwald and so Ivan was on on an elevator and he told me about the movie and said he thought I wasn’t right for the movie. And finally after 3 screentests, I convinced him that I was the one to do the role so… Ivan Reitman was the first person to tell me about the movie.”

RGBO: What was it like working with Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis?
E.H.: “Oh man! I mean, the guys are great, you know? I had a great time! Bill was very cool with me. And Harold and Danny were great! I was happy to be apart of it.

RGBO: Did you get to keep any memorabilia from any of the films?
E.H.: “No, I had my uniform, my jumpsuit from the 2 movies and one of them got taken from a hotel, and I only got the one now.”

RGBO: Do you believe in Ghosts, and if so, have you ever witnessed anything in your personal life that you knew was paranormal?
E.H.: “Yeah, yeah, you know I think I do. I believe that a lot of stuff is going around that we just don’t know about.

RGBO: Do you keep in touch with the cast?
E.H.: “Harold Ramis’s wife and my wife are good friends, so…they keep in touch. And Danny Aykroyd, I worked for Donna Dixon, with Tom Hanks on ‘Bossum Buddies’ some years ago (1981-1982), so I know Donna and I’m still firends with her. So Danny and Harold we run into each other from time to time but Bill Murray, I haven’t see Bill in…quite a long time.

RGBO: How did it feel to be back playing the character, WINSTON again, in the video game?
E.H.: “It’s something that we should have done. It was great having everybody back…(Interupted by a fan coming by to shake Mr. Hudson’s hand)…

RGBO: Unlike “The Real Ghostbusters” cartoon show, if there was a new cartoon series on the show, would you use your voice to become Winston again?
E.H.: “If they had a new one and they asked me to do it, YEAH! You know I didn’t wanna jump through a lot of hoops back than. I think I should have been offered. It’s crazy…and it happens in this business. You know you want to be a part of it but you don’t wanna be kissing anyone’s ass. You know, I mean, I love the work. I’m blessed enough to not have to work so, I wanna be there if they want me there and if not, than you know, let somebody else do it. But yeah you know, I’d love to do it. Anything that has to do with Winston, I want to be the one who plays him.”

RGBO: According to Dan Aykroyd in a Canadian interview back in March of 2007, he said NO to a GHOSTBUSTERS 3 movie. How do you feel about that? Would you still do another one?

E.H.: Yeah! I’ve been wanting to do one. I’ve been talking to Danny and Harold. Danny and Harold…both, I know wanted to do another movie. But Bill Murray has been the holdout and so I’m glad we at least got a chance to do this video game. I think there should have been more movies. I think the fans wanted them and I don’t understand why we didn’t! Bill’s not known for doing sequels with the other movies that he had like the ‘Meatballs’ and all….it would have been nice and a suprise. I know that the fans want it.

RGBO: Will you be attending WonderCon or Comic Con in 2008?
E.H.: Yeah, if I’m invited. If I’m not doing anything, than yeah! I like getting away from L.A. I like getting out and meeting different fans and hanging out so, yeah! I’d love to come. But so far I have not been invited.

RGBO: What can you say about your character, MARCUS WELLS, from your new film you just finished, “The Man in the Silo”?
E.H.: Marcus, you know, I love the character…the movie to me is a little….it’s about a man’s insanity. It’s very intence and a very insane movie. We got a premier next week in Los Angeles It’s really about a character that is completely insane!

For me personally, it was a real great joy to be able to meet a real actor, and when I say real, I mean a actor who is genuine, honest, down to earth and truly, truly cares about the fans. Ernie has proved himself to be a great actor more times than once. Aside from being a terrific voice actor as Cyborg in “The Super Powers Team: Galactic Gardians”, he was great in an episode of “Tales from the Crypt” and in the movie co-starring with Tim Curry in “Congo.” and a huge list of over 141 more films and television shows this gifted actor has been in.

Thank you for this time you have shared and spent with me, Mr. Hudson. Thank you for taking the time out of your schedule to do an interview with RealGhostbustersOnline.com. We really appreciate it!
