RGBO is thrilled to publish our exclusive interview with Dave Coulier, aka, Peter Venkman!!! We hope this answers some questions you may have had about the show. Enjoy…
RGBO: How were you introduced to The Real Ghostbusters series?
DAVE COULIER: I was brought in to The Real Ghostbusters to replace Lorenzo Music. I think ABC and the producers of the show wanted the character to sound more like Bill Murray from the original Ghostbusters movie.
RGBO: How long did it take to tape an episode?
DAVE COULIER: It usually took a few hours. We would do several shows in the same recording session. It would’ve taken less time, but me, Maurice LaMarche and Frank Welker made each other laugh so hard that it took a lot of extra time.
RGBO: Do you own any memorabilia? Such as animation cels, action figures?
DAVE COULIER: I have some cels from the show stored in a box somewhere in my garage.
RGBO: Do you have a favorite episode?
DAVE COULIER: I really don’t have a favorite episode. They were all really fun to record.
RGBO: What do you enjoy most; voicing cartoons, acting or comedy?
DAVE COULIER: I think that I like doing cartoons the best. You can have a ‘bad hair’ day, wear sweats and a t-shirt, and not have to think about what you look like. And I happen to think that the animation actors are really talented and the most fun to work with. It’s like going to work with a bunch of really talented, grownup kids.
RGBO: Did you ever get a chance to meet Bill Murray or Lorenzo Music and if so, did they offer you any advice on the role?
DAVE COULIER: Never met either one of them. I would love to hang out with Bill some day. Maybe play a round of golf or something.
RGBO: Are you still in contact with the cast?
DAVE COULIER: Occasionally I’ll here from Frank or Maurice via email.
RGBO: What was it like behind the scenes, recording in the studio with
Arsenio Hall, Frank Welker and Maurice LaMarche?
DAVE COULIER: We made each other laugh a lot! In fact, the director and producers wouldn’t let us sit next to each other in the recording sessions because we couldn’t stop laughing and wouldn’t get any work done. So then we started passing notes. It was like being in middle school. We just couldn’t stop.
RGBO: You were filming Full House, Muppet Babies and others at the time
of doing The Real Ghostbusters, what was your average day like? How did you handle so many big projects at once?
DAVE COULIER: It was very hectic for me. I was doing Full House, hosting America’s Funniest People, recording Ghostbusters and Muppet Babies, and doing standup dates at the same time. I would do Full House Monday-Friday. Then try to do the other shows on weekends. And we shot Funniest People in Orlando, Florida. I would fly to Florida on Friday night and then start working on Funniest People Saturday morning. We’d finish Sunday and I would fly home that night. Then I’d start the cycle all over again. It wasn’t easy.
RGBO: When you came back to doing the voice of Peter Venkman on The
Extreme Ghostbusters, how did it feel to have came back and did what you had before in 1997?
DAVE COULIER: I had more free time. Full House and Funniest People ended in 1995. It was still really fun to record the shows. And we still couldn’t sit next to each other.
RGBO: Sony seems to not be willing to release The Real Ghostbusters on
DVD in season sets, do you see it coming in the future?
DAVE COULIER: It’s really hard to try and guess why studios make the decisions they make. I’d like to see them release the shows for all the fans to enjoy. I’m sure if there’s a market for them, Sony will release them.
RGBO: You have so many talents and have done so many voices, do you
have a favorite and if so, why?
DAVE COULIER: I really enjoy doing standup. I get to write the script and be the fastest mind in the room for an hour or so. And it’s live. I love that immediate response and that energy.
RGBO: What projects are you working on now?
DAVE COULIER: I had two movies come out this year – “Shredderman” on Nickelodeon and “The Family Holiday” which is on Amazon.com and available at Walmart. I’ve heard from the producers that “The Family Holiday” is a hot seller! It was also be airing on The Lifetime Network.
RGBO: Would you mind telling us about Clean Guys?
DAVE COULIER: Cleanguys is a brand. We started with a website (www.cleanguys.TV) and have been moving forward ever since. The website features clean comedy content. We’re doing a comedy tour starting in ’08 called “The Clean Guys Of Comedy” tour – a clean standup show that your entire family can enjoy. Check us out on www.MySpace.com/cleanguys and ‘friend’ us. In the future, www.cleanguys.TV will explode with social networking and games. Users will be able to create their own cleanguy character and build their own ‘cleaners’ to keep all of their clean content in. You’ll then be able to take you cleanguys character to our gaming section and clean up “Smutville” with your power washer and/or vacuum cleaner. It’s going to be very cool!!! We’ll be producing standup comedy TV specials, VOD, content for mobile, DVD’s…and it’s all going to be CLEAN!!! We hope you’ll all come along and help us. We like to say that we’re: “Washing America’s Mouth Out With Funny!”
RGBO: Finally, would you like to say something to all The Real
Ghostbusters fans out there?
DAVE COULIER: Thank you for making the show such a popular cartoon series. I appreciate you all so very much.
We thank Mr. Coulier for taking the time out of his insanely busy schedule for this rare opportunity!
